Walking & Cycling Track Access
We would love to hear from you guys, what do you think?
The Importance of Trail, Walking, and Cycling Access:
New Zealand has numerous walks and cycleways along well-maintained paths and tracks with a wide variety of environments and scenery, which are one of the attractions of many districts. They are a great way to explore the area's unique and natural beauty. Councils work with other organizations, such as the Department of Conservation (DoC), to provide and look after the tracks to suit the capabilities of people of all ages and various fitness levels. "
This needs to include the disabled or less able. With the rapid development of electrically driven vehicles comes the rapid development of battery-powered mobility assistance devices such as power chairs, mobility scooters, and hand-driven or electric trikes. In most cases, there are car parks and signage indicating the routes at the beginning of the tracks. Toilet facilities are available at many of them.
Access to many tracks is restricted to prevent motorcycles from accessing these tracks; unfortunately, the current design also blocks many disabled people who may ride modified hand trikes, power chairs, mobility scooters, or hand-driven or electric trikes. We really need to open our minds and to our environment (disabled people are not the problem; society and the environment are the problem). They may ride modified hand trikes, power chairs, mobility scooters, or hand-driven or electric trikes. We really need to open our minds and to our environment (disabled people are not the problem; society and the environment are the problem); more effort needs to go into providing access; the practice of punishing the many for the crimes of the few is old-fashioned; blocking access to the disabled in order to block access to motorbikes is unfair and needs urgent review.
